Toyota Inspection Prep Checklist

CHECKLIST Roadworthiness Print friendly Quick fixes

How to use this

5–25 minutes

This is a general inspection prep checklist. Requirements vary (TÜV / MOT / local rules), but these checks catch the most common “surprise fails”.

Best approach: do this checklist 1–2 weeks before inspection so you have time to fix small items.
Safety note: If you suspect brake issues, fuel leaks, or overheating — don’t drive the car. Get professional help.

The checklist

Tick items as you go
1) Dashboard & warning lights 4 items
No warning lights staying on after start (engine, ABS, airbag, hybrid, etc.)
Active warnings often fail inspection or require proof of repair.
OBD scan (optional but recommended): no unresolved fault codes
Some inspections check OBD readiness and codes.
Horn works
Often a simple but required item.
Wipers and washer spray work (front + rear if equipped)
Visibility/safety requirement.
2) Lights & visibility 6 items
Headlights: low beam + high beam working
Safety + legal requirement.
Turn signals: left/right + hazards
Very common fail item when a bulb is out.
Brake lights + third brake light
Safety requirement.
Tail lights + license plate light
Often overlooked.
Fog lights (if fitted): check operation
Sometimes checked; depends on region.
Windshield: no major cracks in driver view
Visibility and safety.
3) Tires, wheels & alignment 5 items
Tire tread depth within legal limit
Worn tires are a common failure.
No tire damage (bulges, cords, sidewall cuts)
Safety hazard; often an automatic fail.
Correct tire pressure
Can affect braking, handling, and wear.
Wheel bolts/nuts present and secure
Safety item.
Car drives straight; no strong pulling or steering shake
Could indicate alignment/suspension issues.
4) Brakes (quick checks) 4 items
No grinding/squealing, no strong vibration when braking
Pads/rotors may be near end-of-life.
Brake pedal feels firm; no sinking pedal
Fluid leaks/air in system are safety critical.
Parking brake holds the car on a slope
Often checked explicitly.
No brake fluid leak around wheels or under car
Leaks are typically an automatic fail.
5) Underbody, leaks & exhaust 5 items
No visible fuel leaks or strong fuel smell
Safety hazard.
No major oil/coolant leaks (small seep vs drip)
Many inspections fail active dripping.
Exhaust secure: no hanging parts, no loud leaks
Noise + emissions concerns.
Rust check (especially structural areas)
Severe corrosion can fail inspection.
Catalyst/DPF not tampered with (where applicable)
Emissions compliance.
6) Suspension & steering 4 items
No clunking noises over bumps
Could indicate worn links/bushings.
No excessive play in steering wheel
Steering safety.
No fluid leaks from shocks/struts
Worn dampers can fail in some regions.
CV boots intact (no grease flung around)
Boot failure can lead to expensive joint damage.
7) Interior safety & seatbelts 3 items
Seatbelts latch and retract properly
Safety requirement.
Airbag warning light off
Common inspection fail.
Seats secure; headrests present where required
Safety.
8) Paperwork (fast but important) 3 items
Registration / proof of ownership / required documents
You may be turned away without paperwork.
Insurance (where required)
Sometimes required to drive to/from inspection.
Service records (optional but helpful)
Useful if any questions arise.

Fast fixes that often save an inspection

Low effort, big payoff
Fix Cost Time
Replace blown bulbs (signals, brake, plate light) Low 5–20 min
Top up washer fluid / replace wiper blades Low 5–10 min
Correct tire pressures Low 5 min
Clean headlights, sensors, and windshield Low 10–20 min
Fix small exhaust rattle / loose heat shield Low–Medium 15–60 min
Tip: If you changed bulbs, re-check all lights once more. It’s easy to miss a second failed bulb.

When to stop DIY and get help

Don’t gamble
  • Any warning light that stays on (engine/ABS/airbag/hybrid).
  • Brake pedal feels soft/sinks, or braking feels unsafe.
  • Active fluid drip (oil, coolant, brake fluid, fuel).
  • Loud exhaust leak, smoke, or strong fuel smell.
  • Steering play, heavy pulling, or severe vibration.
